Citi is a major global financial institution with a presentce spanning more than 180 countries and jurisdictions. In November 2025, Citi announced that U.S. Consumer Cards would become one of the company’s five core businesses.
In the U.S., Citi’s consumer card business offers a broad mix of Citi-branded, co-branded, and private-label credit cards, along with installment lending products. Its lineup covers everyday spending, travel rewards, balance transfers, credit building, and cards offered through partnerships with major brands.
Citi’s proprietary card lineup includes several well-known products designed for different types of consumers. The Citi Double Cash® Card is geared toward simple cash-back earning, while the Citi Strata® family focuses on rewards and travel. Citi also offers cards such as the Citi Simplicity® Credit Card and Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card, which are aimed primarily at consumers looking for introductory APR and balance-transfer opportunities. For consumers building or rebuilding credit, Citi also offers the Citi® Secured Mastercard®.
Citi has developed the Strata® family of rewards credit cards as a central part of its proprietary card portfolio. The Citi Strata Premier® Card was introduced in May 2024 as an enhanced version of the Citi Premier®. Citi expanded the family with the Citi Strata℠ Card and completed the premium lineup with the launch of the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card in July 2025.
Beyond its core Citi-branded cards, Citi has extensive experience managing co-branded and private-label card programs for major consumer brands. ts most prominent current partnerships include American Airlines and Costco, while Citi Retail Services also manages card programs for other well-known brands.
Citi is the exclusive U.S. issuer of the American Airlines AAdvantage® co-branded credit cards under its expanded 10-year partnership with American Airlines. The agreement also included the transition of the existing Barclays-issued AAdvantage portfolio to Citi in 2026.
The Citi® / AAdvantage® portfolio offers cards across different annual-fee levels and travel needs. Consumer options include American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Card, Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®, Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard®, and the premium Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®. Business owners can also choose the Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ World Elite Mastercard®.
Launched in October 2025, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard® added a mid-tier option to the portfolio, combining AAdvantage® miles with travel benefits and Admirals Club® Globe™ passes.
Citi and American Airlines have continued to enhance the portfolio. In July 2023, the companies added new benefits to the Executive card. In August 2026, they announced significant enhancements to the premium card, which is being offered as the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Legend Mastercard® beginning August 23, 2026. The refreshed card adds enhanced travel and lifestyle benefits, higher earning opportunities, and new ways to earn AAdvantage® Loyalty Points.
Citi also partners with major consumer brands outside of the American Airlines relationship. For example, Citi and AT&T launched the AT&T Points Plus® Card in November 2022. In April 2026, the companies enhanced the card with new ways for AT&T customers to save on wireless and internet bills and earn ThankYou® Points.
Citi also has a long-standing presence in the private-label credit card market through Citi Retail Services. In February 2022, Citi Retail Services and ExxonMobil renewed their multi-year partnership, extending a relationship that had already spanned 15 years. The agreement included the launch of the Exxon Mobil Smart Card+™.
In addition to traditional credit card products, Citi offers installment payment solutions that allow eligible cardmembers to spread certain purchases or borrowing over time. Citi Flex Pay® can allow eligible purchases to be divided into fixed monthly payments, while other Citi Flex products may provide eligible cardmembers with access to additional borrowing options. Availability, fees, and terms vary by card and offer.
Many of Citi’s rewards cards participate in the Citi ThankYou® Rewards program. This creates opportunities to earn ThankYou Points across multiple Citi cards and, with eligible cards, access additional redemption and travel-transfer options.
For example, a consumer could combine a cash-back-oriented card such as the Citi Double Cash® Card with an eligible premium ThankYou card to build a more flexible Citi rewards strategy. This makes Citi particularly interesting for consumers who want to combine everyday spending rewards with travel benefits.
Citi stands out for several types of cardholders. Its strengths include simple cash back, the ThankYou® Points ecosystem, long introductory APR and balance-transfer offers, and major co-branded relationships such as American Airlines and Costco.
However, Citi’s lineup may be less compelling for consumers looking for the broadest selection of premium luxury travel cards, entry-level rewards cards, or small-business credit cards. The best Citi card ultimately depends on your spending habits, travel preferences, credit profile, and whether you value cash back, travel rewards, introductory APR offers, or co-branded benefits.
Citi ranks ninth among major credit card issuers in overall customer satisfaction, according to J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Study, with a score of 597 points out of 1,000. Citi fell two positions from 2025, when it ranked seventh with a score of 608 points. Its 2026 score remains below the study’s issuer average.
Citi’s decline is part of a broader shift in the 2026 rankings. Bank of America fell one position but remained above the issuer average. Capital One experienced one of the largest declines, falling from third place in 2025, with a score above the issuer average, to eighth place in 2026, below the average. Meanwhile, Chase moved from fourth to second place and Wells Fargo rose from sixth to fourth; both remained above the issuer average. American Express retained the top position with the highest overall satisfaction score, while Discover remained in fifth place.
J.D. Power’s study also provides satisfaction results for individual credit card products across different card segments.
The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi scored 643 points and ranked third among co-branded credit cards with no annual fee, performing above the segment average. The My Best Buy® Visa® Card, also issued by Citi, scored 532 points, below the segment average.
Among no-annual-fee bank rewards credit cards, the Citi Double Cash® Card ranked ninth with a score of 630 points, which was above the segment average.
Citi’s balance-transfer-focused cards performed below the segment average. The Citi® Diamond Preferred® Card scored 561 points, while the Citi Simplicity® Card scored 532 points in the no-rewards, no-annual-fee bank credit card segment.
Citi’s AAdvantage® cards also scored below their segment average in the airline co-brand credit card category. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® scored 643 points, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® scored 635 points, and the American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Card scored 631 points.
Overall, J.D. Power’s 2026 results suggest that Citi’s customer experience is mixed: the issuer trails the industry average overall, but several individual cards, including the Costco Anywhere Visa and Citi Double Cash, performed above their respective segment averages.
